The full form of DSAW is Double Submerged Arc Welded pipe. As the name suggests, these pipes are used for the deep water applications and are manufactured to survive under extreme deep water conditions. This pipe has derived its name from its welding process. The API 5L DSAW Pipe have attained the specification standards set by the API 5L which covers all the welded and seamless steel pipes and states them suitable form transportation of gas, oil and other petroleum products.

The API 5L DSAW Pipe undergoes the process where the welding arc is submerged in a flux during the welding takes place. This flux is said to protect the steel in the welded area so that the impurities in the air cannot enter the pipe. When the inside and outside walls of the pipe is performed, the welding is skilled in separate processes and thus the pipe is referred to as double submerged arc welded.

There are basically three types of pipes produces in the DSAW process and they are made using the rolled and welded method, the U and O method and Spiral weld. The API 5L DSAW Pipe can be précised in very large diameters. The manufacturing of these pipes includes forming of steel plates into cylindrical shapes first. Then the edges of these cylinders is rolled so that V shaped grooves are formed. The arch is welded and submerged in the flux that produce very strong bonds of the pipe and prevents impurities to enter. These pipes can withstand heavy pressure and can be applied underwater in the best manner.
